A parental engagement project
We aim to create a parent/carer community to ensure both parents and their children feel heard and understood, and can work together to overcome personal, school, and learning challenges.
We developed the ‘Whit dae ye hink’ (What do you think) project, a parental engagement service in partnership with schools. We listen to and support parents/carers with concerns and suggestions to make their school a better place.
Whit's it aw aboot?
Part of Positive Transitions, the project began in 2017, working with Leith Primary School. In 2018 we expanded the project to work in partnership with additional schools in the Leith Academy cluster including Lorne Primary School, Craigentinny Primary School and Hermitage Park Primary school.
Our method is comprised of two phases. In Phase 1 starts we listen to parents and carers' in informal consultations at pick-up time after school. We collate this information into an illustrated guide, showing how to move forward.
Our work in Leith Primary School has led us to Phase 2, in which we asked pupils how to improve the school. We collected their answers into a video, which we showed at the event 'All Together Now'. After speaking to parents and their children, we asked them to give us their thoughts all together. We will soon be delivering Phase 2 in our other partner schools!
