Making dreams a reality

Positive Transitions Coordinator Nicola has secured a new role as an Assistant psychologist for CAMHS at NHS Lothian. Building upon the knowledge gained during her time at People Know How, Nicola looks forward to continuing to support young people in a new capacity.

Nicola joined People Know How in September 2022 but her dream of supporting young people started long before then. During her time at the university in Glasgow, she completed undergraduate and masters degrees in Clinical Health Psychology and discovered a passion for supporting young people, ensuring they have the best support systems in place to help them navigate growing up.

Nicola spent a year working in a primary school assisting children with additional support needs and learnt more about the support systems in place and how they could be improved. With this passion to help young people, Nicola joined People Know How ready to make a difference and bring new and innovative ideas to Positive Transitions.

Our Positive Transitions service supports young people across Edinburgh and the Lothians during the school transition period to feel comfortable and express their concerns and questions in a positive environment. Our team of Positive Transitions Coordinators each bring a unique skill set to the table, leading to support for young people that is diverse, engaging and rewarding for everyone involved.

“I love that my team are so talented - they all bring something unique to our sessions. When we work together, magic happens. There’s nothing quite like it.”

Teamwork makes the dream work

At People Know How, the sky’s the limit. Thinking outside the box has helped us get to where we are today, and we encourage our staff to have that same attitude when it comes to the work they do and their own personal goals.

Nicola has been a driving force in continually working to improve the support we can provide for young people. She has created resources and session plans that have been shared with the team, supporting the service with a bank of tools on topics important to young people and their families.

Giving our team the freedom and support they need helps them discover their strengths and how they can utilise them in the support they provide. Nicola has supported young people with different needs and backgrounds and is constantly looking for new ways to ensure she’s providing the best support tailored for each young person.

“Working with People Know How has been my favourite job, I’ve been on an incredible journey and learned so much from the young people and families I’ve supported. I wouldn’t be in this new job without People Know How and I’m so grateful for the time I’ve had in my role.”
Nicola

At the end of April, Nicola begins the next chapter of her career as a clinical psychologist for young people at CALMS. She leaves People Know How bolstered with new ideas, a wealth of insights and many cherished memories. Her passion for supporting young people only grows, and we know that Nicola will continue to inspire and make a difference in the field of psychology.

We couldn't be prouder of every member of the People Know How staff team and the impact they have on our ability to drive social innovation.
