Team People Know How and teachers from St Gabriel’s RC Primary School banded together to tackle the Kiltwalk, raising £3,406.25 for those we support.

Fundraising is an excellent way to help support the charities you care about and help them continue to provide support to communities. Funds will often be put towards activities, service provision and new equipment, and helps third sector organisations to continue to innovate. While fundraising helps raise money for charity, it’s also an opportunity to help raise awareness for a cause close to home. Without community-based fundraising, many charities would struggle to exist.

At People Know How, fundraising helps fund our Positive Transitions and Reconnect services and ensures we can continue running trips on our All Aboard canal boat. Community-based fundraising through joint collaborations like the Kiltwalk help unite those in our community and help us reach a wider audience.

Positive impact

We began supporting St Gabriel’s RC Primary School in East Lothian in 2022 through our Positive Transitions service. Since our support began, we’ve helped many young people with the often-challenging process of transitioning to secondary school and the difficulties that come with it.

When we announced that we were taking part in the Kiltwalk earlier this year, Acting Principal Teacher Mark O’Neill and a band of teachers were excited at the thought of helping raise funds so we could continue to help more children and young people across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

“We were fortunate that 14 pupils from my Primary 7 class benefited from the support People Know How offered through art therapy, drama therapy, youth worker support and one-to-one social work interventions. Working closely with the charity has been great, and their support has been amazing.”
Mark O’Neill, Acting Principal Teacher, St Gabriel's RC Primary School

The Kiltwalk is Scotland’s largest walking event, with over 120,000 people taking part since 2016 raising money for a charity of their choice. Since Its inception, it has raised £24.6 million, which has been further supported by donations of £12.5 million by Sir Tom Hunter and the Hunter Foundation.

And it's no easy feat; it requires its participants to walk between 5 and 21 miles across Edinburgh, facing different terrains and weather conditions. Teachers and our staff facilitated many training walks in preparation for the event, and some even brought their canine companions along for some good company. These walks are here to stay for many of our walkers. They have been touted as the perfect escape from the city, providing a much-needed mental wellbeing boost.

Fundraising possibilities

The combined effort of our staff and the team from St Gabriel’s has been nothing short of admirable, raising £3,406.25 that will allow us to continue making a difference in young people's lives.

“We watched pupils grow in confidence and self-esteem as a direct result of support. This helped many of our young people with the transition to high school, and I am so delighted to have had the opportunity to work with People Know How over the past year.”
Mark O’Neill, Acting Principal Teacher, St Gabriel's RC Primary School

Without the support of the People Know How community, we wouldn’t be able to get involved in community fundraising events like this. As we continue to grow, we’re excited to continue to engage in opportunities like the Kiltwalk that allow our community to fundraise alongside us.

Even if you don’t have the time to participate in a fundraising event, a donation as small as £10 can go a long way to help us continue to provide support to children and young people across Edinburgh and the Lothians as they face the challenges of the transition to secondary school.
