Shaping your future

Craigentinny, Lochend, Restalrig and Loganlea

The Consultation

Shaping your future was a community consultation that aimed to capture as many different voices as possible on the route to unlocking positive change in these areas.

The community of Craigentinny and the surrounding areas of Lochend, Restalrig and Loganlea lie in the North-East of Edinburgh, between Leith and Portobello. This community drew our attention at People Know How because:

  • It boasts a thriving public community centre; the first of its kind in Scotland. Based in Craigentinny Castle, the centre offers a wide range of projects, clubs and activities.
  • The local Craigentinny Primary School and Nursery is at the centre of the community, promoting inclusion and lifelong learning.
  • The local Community Council is actively working to engage local people in local decision making.
  • Craigentinny has already been part of a wider community engagement programme, run by the City of Edinburgh Council, that produced the first North-East Edinburgh Local Improvement Plan 2017- 2022.
  • It’s a community facing considerable change whilst looking ahead to the future.
  • Local residents face some of the most acute challenges of poverty and social inequality in the country, as defined by the Scottish Government’s Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD).
  • The North-East locality of the city has the largest number of adults without qualifications and the highest percentage of people with long-term health problems.

How can we ensure that the community of Craigentinny, Lochend, Restalrig and Loganlea can tackle these challenges? What’s more, can it seize the opportunities that lie ahead?

Starting the Conversation

People Know How collaborated with Craigentinny Community Centre, Craigentinny Primary School and Nursery, the Community Council, a range of local groups and business; and local residents to encourage people to share their frustrations, their concerns and above all, their dreams for their community.

Look out for us in the following places:

  • Craigentinny Community Centre - during our Our Monday drop-ins at 15:00 - 17:00
  • Craigentinny Primary School and Nursery - to chat with parents, carers and pupils
  • Community Council meetings - providing updates and seeking your views
  • Out and about in the community

We created a survey for those who live, work or volunteer in Craigentinny, Lochend, Restalrig or Loganlea, so they could let us know their thoughts!

We wanted to capture as many different voices as possible because we believe that the residents of an area are the key to unlocking positive change in that area, based on their hopes and ideas.

The survey was distributed around the area by volunteers.
