Fairer Scotland Consultation

What does Scotland need to be a much better place?

The consultation

The Scottish Government had been talking to different groups of people across Scotland to find out what is needed to make Scotland a much better place. By the end of 2015 they aimed to have created opportunities for the widest possible range of voices to be heard. The views and ideas heard were to contribute to the development of a Social Justice Action Plan.

People Know How ran an event on the 13th October 2015 in Edinburgh to gather views from attendees on the following questions:

  • What are the issues that matter most to you?
  • What do you think needs to be done?
  • How can you and your community play a role in helping to shape our future?

Our method

People Know How was very excited at the prospect of being involved in the Scotland wide debate on how to create a Fairer Scotland. So we created an online survey with the idea of reaching as many people as possible.

We also wanted to give to the Spanish Speaking Community the opportunity to answer these same questions. That’s why we created another survey in Spanish, so the Scottish Government could take into account their opinions.

We promoted both surveys through Twitter and Facebook. We were very pleased by the response rate, especially among the Spanish Speaking community.

Key points

  • Problems faced by citizens

Poverty, legal processes, lack of understanding towards people from different classes.

  • Main issues

Taxation and housing, equality and health, financial support.

  • What fairer Scotland means

    Federal, child-friendly, transparent.

Conclusions

The main conclusion was that to create a fairer Scotland we should be working on the basis of “AND”. TThe idea behind this is that we should always be thinking of adding more aspects and ideas to our plan for a fairer Scotland. Being fair is always a complex issue, and we should consider all solutions and approaches - there is no “one size fits all".
