Volunteering: Looking Back and Leaving a Legacy

Glenn LiddallNews

Join us as we celebrate the amazing people who volunteered with People Know How. Reflect on the PKH approach and how volunteering changes lives; for the volunteer, the organisation, and the community.

As we near the end of our legacy project, this two-part podcast series celebrates and reflects on the invaluable contributions of volunteers throughout the charity’s history, and encourages people, communities and charities to embrace volunteering and its benefits.

Facilitated by Glenn Liddall, Chief Executive & Founder of People Know How, the podcast honours everyone who has given their time and energy to the charity; from its earliest days to its final months. Across both parts, guests reflect on the legacy of volunteering at People Know How and explore how the charity’s unique approach has shaped both individual lives and wider communities.

The first part features Leah Harris, former VIP (Volunteers, Interns & Placement Students) Officer, and Craig Stack, former Digital & Wellbeing Coordinator who began his journey as a volunteer. They are joined by Miriam Leighton, from the City of Edinburgh Council, who heads up the city’s Community Grants Programme worth around £400,000 annually (note the recording states £4,000 in error). She talks about the added value volunteers make when sitting on local funding panels as part of the awards process. Finally, Morna O’May, speaks from an academic perspective on the challenges and opportunities volunteering presents, including the current falling volunteer numbers.

The second part, recorded aboard the All Aboard canal boat, continues the conversation in a more informal setting. Leah and Craig return, joined by Yasmin Ditta; a volunteer on the canal boat and a befriender supporting children transitioning from primary to secondary school along with Nigel Bennie, also a dedicated All Aboard volunteer.

Together, they discuss People Know How’s core volunteering pledge: that volunteering should be mutually beneficial. It’s a philosophy that ensures volunteers gain just as much as they give through skills development, confidence building, and meaningful connections. The episodes also aim to encourage both individuals and organisations to get involved in volunteering, highlighting the importance of strong support structures to ensure positive, lasting experiences for everyone involved.

Above all, the podcast is a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who have shaped People Know How over the years; a celebration of their commitment, energy, and the lasting legacy they leave behind.
