You’re invited to our floating exhibition showcasing the artistic creations from summer arts programme, Dear Lothian!

On 11 August we’re holding an exhibition showcasing the art and sound pieces of young people who have participated in our summer arts partnership programme, Dear Lothian. The exhibition will take place on our jointly owned canal boat, All Aboard, and will feature watercolour paintings, oral histories, soundscapes, and scrapbooks kept throughout the programme!

Over the past two months Dear Lothian has encouraged young people from Edinburgh and East Lothian to explore their local area, increasing confidence and resilience as they prepare for high school, through arts sessions developed in partnership with the University of Edinburgh Museums Service, Historic Environment Scotland, Scran, Museums & Galleries Edinburgh and St Cecilia’s Hall.

In July our young participants explored Edinburgh Castle through archive photography and old postcards. In another session, the young people explored music of the past and present and created their own soundscapes by layering clips of the sounds of their neighbourhoods. The theme of sound continued in the next session, where participants learnt about oral histories, leading them to conduct interviews of their own. And in the final session, our young participants took inspiration from artists on exhibit at the City Art Centre and created watercolours of their local areas.

“It’s been wonderful to collaborate with partner organisations to bring these sessions to life. The summer before high school, particularly during the pandemic, can be a stressful time. Through Dear Lothian we have witnessed the excitement and increase in confidence that can result from opportunities to engage with their local community through the arts.”

As the programme draws to a close, we’re delighted to present the results of these wonderful sessions on our canal boat. Come along to the All Aboard canal boat behind Polwarth Parish Church at 36-38 Polwarth Terrace between 11am and 3pm on 11 August and check out the Dear Lothian exhibition!
