To celebrate Volunteers Week, People Know How were joined by Aileen Campbell MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government. Ms Campbell heard all about our new project All Aboard and joined us on a cruise along the Union Canal.
Summer pilot
This outing formed part of an ongoing summer pilot, during which we are trialling the benefits of delivering our Positive Transitions service on board a barge. We hope to use the canal's characteristic uniqueness to bring people together from across Edinburgh and to break down real or imagined ‘divides’ or perceived barriers to access to activities which will be both beneficial and enjoyable to the children, young-people and families we work with.
Working in partnership
We have been working in partnership with the Polwarth Parish Church for the past year, developing a plan for the new barge project. We are currently supporting the Church's efforts to raise funds to buy a barge and our plan is then to work together to deliver services on board for the benefit of Edinburgh's communities. We share the Church's commitment to seeing the continued regeneration of the canal as an asset of the city, and we see ourselves as having a positive role in opening up this asset to communities across city who perhaps don't see it as their 'place'.
